Your Schedule Isn't Busy. It's Unpredictable.
A full calendar isn’t always the problem. A calendar that keeps changing is.
Short-notice changes force people to rearrange care, appointments, and rest, not just work. That hidden coordination depletes them even when hours look reasonable. A 2026 study in Social Indicators Research found unpredictable schedules were linked to lower wellbeing, with an effect up to twice that of family income.
Notice
“Busy” describes volume. “Unpredictable” describes uncertainty.
The Shift Project found 60% of service-sector workers get less than two weeks’ notice and 57% face last-minute changes, while hours swing 34% between their busiest and lightest weeks.
Track how often priorities and commitments change.
Notice who absorbs the change, again and again.
Separate necessary change from preventable change.

Repair
A schedule is a message about the relationship between an organization and its people. When leaders revise plans without warning, employees conclude their time is the easiest resource to spend.
Gallup’s September 2026 update found only 21% of employees strongly agree their organization cares about their wellbeing, tying the record low. Yet people who feel supported by their manager are about 70% less likely to burn out often. Burnout costs roughly $322 billion a year.
Explain what changed and why, early.
Say what should pause, instead of only adding tasks.
After a hard week, check whether recovery time is needed.
Stability doesn’t mean nothing moves. It means changes are handled with care.
Practice
Schedule stewardship is a relationship practice: people feel connection in the calendar, in the notice they receive and how leaders respond when plans move.

Resilience-based leadership asks whether the disruption can be reduced at its source, not only survived.
Set a planning rhythm. Decide when schedules become firm.
Build in capacity. Leave room for real emergencies.
Review the pattern together. Ask whose time is most often displaced.
Close the loop. When a commitment changes, name the impact.
Performance and retention grow where people feel genuinely connected, valued, and understood. That is the promise behind ROR: Return on Relationship.
Where does unpredictability keep showing up in your calendar? What would change if people could feel your care in the way their time is planned?
